Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori (86) has died. Fujimori was suffering from cancer for a long time. His family confirmed that he died on Wednesday (September 11) at his home in the country’s capital, Lima.
Announcing Alberto’s death, his daughter Keiko wrote on social media X, “Our father Alberto Fujimori has just passed away.
A few hours before his death, Fuerza Popular Party spokesman Miguel Torres said the former president’s condition was “fragile”. He is going through a ‘difficult time’.
Former President Fujimori was widely criticized and punished for crimes against humanity in his own country. He had to serve 16 years in jail for this.
Fujimori was in power in Peru from 1990 to 2000. Later, the former president was sentenced to 25 years in prison for crimes against humanity. After spending 16 consecutive years in prison, he was released on humanitarian grounds last December.
Peruvian Prime Minister Gustavo Adriano expressed grief over the death of the former president. “We want to tell the children and family members of Alberto Fujimori that we are saddened by his death,” he said.
