With three headed goals, Atlético de Madrid beat Real Madrid 3-1 this Sunday, at the Metropolitano stadium, in the sixth round of the Spanish Championship. Furthermore, it prevented the Merengue team from retaking the lead.

With the defeat, their first in the tournament, Real Madrid fell to third place, with 15 points, behind Barcelona and Girona, both with 16. Atlético de Madrid reached ten, in fifth place. Fourth is Athletic Bilbao, with 13.

Real Madrid did not incorporate the classic at the beginning of the match and entered in a sleepy manner, allowing Atlético de Madrid to open the scoring after just four minutes. Samuel Dias made a good move on the wing and crossed to Morata. The striker made a slight deflection to beat Arrizabalaga.

Unable to find their footing on the field, Real turned the ball around easily to their rival, who added another goal at 18, in a move similar to that of the first goal. Saúl Ñíguez crossed for Griezmann to make it 2-0.

In front of the scoreboard, Atlético ended up settling down and saw Real Madrid decrease in the first half. Toni Kroos grabbed the rebound outside the box, cut to the midfielder and hit a dry shot to get the Merengue club back into the match.

Real Madrid’s start to the second half was once again desperate. With that, Atlético de Madrid scored the third in the same way as the previous goals. In the opening minute, Saúl Ñíguez found Morata, who headed the goalkeeper Arrizabalaga from close range to make it 3-1.

Atlético de Madrid almost made it four at nine. Hermoso received the ball on the penalty spot and, with the goalkeeper sold, put the ball on the crossbar. After the move, Simeone’s team retreated and started to play in the good old cupeiro style, a characteristic feature of the coach.

With that, the ball went to Real Madrid, who started to create good scoring opportunities. In the best of them, Brahim Diaz invaded the area and put goalkeeper Jan Oblak to work. He even made important saves that ensured the home team’s triumph.

Also this Sunday, Real Sociedad (8th) beat Getafe (13th) 4-3, while Las Palmas (15th) defeated Granada (19th) 1-0. Rayo Vallecano (7th) drew 1-1 with Villarreal (12th), same score as Betis (10th) and Cádiz (9th).
