This Sunday (24), in reference to World Car Free Day, the Federal District Traffic Department (Detran-DF) promoted the 14th stage of the Detran Bike Tour Circuit in the RAs. Starting at Parking Lot 11 at Parque da Cidade, at 9am, more than 400 cyclists took part on the 8km route, made through the park and a part of W4 South.

Educational activities were also promoted before the start, with speeches and distribution of kits for participants. The head of Detran’s Educational Campaigns Center, Miguel Videl, stated that the purpose of the event was to show the local community that bicycles are also part of traffic as a vehicle. Furthermore, the manager highlighted that the campaigns aim to show all cyclists that they have traffic rules to follow.

“They have rights, but they also have duties. One issue that draws attention is that people think that bicycles cannot travel on public roads. You can, as long as there is no cycle path, cycle lane or shoulder. If this road is not suitable for the cyclist, he has every right to ride on it, as long as it is in the direction of the road and never in the opposite direction. And, when he goes to cross the pedestrian crossing, get off the bike and cross the crossing, as a pedestrian”, he explains.

Miguel also added that one of the organization’s missions is to work on the issue of empathy, ensuring that everyone travels safer. “In traffic, the bigger one will always take care of the smaller one. In traffic, choose life”, he added, with the theme of National Traffic Week.

Non-pedal family

Correios engineer Nilson Carneiro has been cycling for five years and participated in the event, while his wife, Sandra Carneiro, waited with their 8-month-old son – little Gabriel Carneiro, who arrived in the basket of his father’s bicycle.

“Gabriel really likes these outdoor activities. He came to interact and start to feel calmer with large events. It’s really cool (events like this), because it works on people’s culture and raises awareness, both pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. I think it’s important to happen more frequently. It’s really good to cycle. We feel better, we sleep better, our mood improves,” he reported.

For Márcia Pereira, her bike routine started three years ago. The retired teacher started cycling during the Covid-19 pandemic to improve her health. This Sunday was the first time she participated in a Detran event. “When I started cycling, I weighed 80 kg, today I weigh 57 kg. But today this sport goes beyond health. The importance of the event is to raise awareness and promote cyclists’ rights, such as riding on public roads. I came to make numbers to give visibility to this cause”, highlighted the retiree.

According to the director of Traffic Safety at the National Traffic Secretariat (Senatran), Maria Alice Nascimento, it was an intense week of actions, very important for raising people’s awareness. “It is important to raise awareness regarding respect and citizenship, including cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians, that traffic is carried out by all of us, not just by vehicles. And, above all, respecting these vulnerable people in traffic, bringing these concepts into our institutions and our society”, highlighted the director.
