The first weekend of spring will have 12 Brazilian capitals with maximum temperatures reaching at least 35°C this Sunday (24), according to Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology).

Only one capital, Porto Alegre, will have a maximum temperature below 30°C (21°C), according to the institute.

The strong heat wave that hits the country and caused the city of São Paulo to have the hottest winter in the last 62 years will cause the maximum to reach 42°C this Sunday in Cuiabá (MT).

This Friday (22), the capital of Mato Grosso had already recorded the highest temperature in the country, with 41.8°C. Of the 20 hottest points in Brazil on the day, 15 are in the Central-West region, including Porto Murtinho, with 41.5°C, and Água Clara, both in Mato Grosso do Sul, with 41.2°C.

On Sunday, the scenario should not be very different, taking into account the forecasts of Inmet, an agency of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. Campo Grande (MS) will have a maximum of 39°C, just above Goiânia (GO), where thermometers could reach 38°C. In Brasília (DF), the predicted maximum is 34°C.

In São Paulo, the expected maximum is 35°C, the same temperature predicted for Belo Horizonte (MG). In Rio, thermometers may reach 38°C and, in Vitória (ES), 33°C.

Winter officially ended at 3:50 am (Brasília time) this Saturday (23), starting spring, which runs until December 22.

On Friday, the capital of São Paulo had its hottest day of the year, with a maximum of 34.7°C, surpassing the two previous records, also recorded in the last weeks of winter: 33.9°C on Sunday (18) and 33 .3°C on day 13.

The city is expected to surpass this mark this weekend and have the hottest day in history, according to the state Civil Defense.

Of the seven capitals in the North, five will have a maximum temperature of at least 35°C – Boa Vista (RR), Manaus (AM), Palmas (TO), Porto Velho (RO) and Rio Branco (AC).

In the Northeast, only Teresina (PI) is expected to have a temperature above 35°C among the nine capitals, but in none the maximum will be below 30°C.

In the South, the expected temperatures will be lower. In addition to Porto Alegre (RS), where the minimum temperature is expected to be 17°C, in Curitiba (PR) the thermometers will range from 19°C to 33°C and, in Florianópolis (SC), from 20°C to 32°C .

WHAT WAVE IS THIS?

The country is experiencing an unseasonal heat wave and there is a warning of great danger for high temperatures until Sunday, according to Inmet. In addition to the capitals, the institute reported that thermometers can exceed 40°C in areas of the Central-West and South Africa.

North, in addition to the interior of São Paulo – this Saturday, Ribeirão Preto had 38°C.

Heat waves are characterized by an increase of 5°C in relation to average temperatures. If the increase is seen over a period of 2 to 3 days, the alert is moderate. From 3 to 5 days, it becomes dangerous. For more than five consecutive days, the warning moves to the high danger category.

The heat is caused by time and reduced cloud cover, which keeps the temperature of the air mass high. A phenomenon is underway that causes an atmospheric blockage that causes winds to occur in upper levels of the atmosphere, which prolongs days of high temperatures.
