August 2023 had the highest global temperature ever recorded for this period of year by the United States Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA). According to the agency, which has been recording global temperatures for 174 years, this was the hottest August ever seen both in the northern hemisphere, which faces summer at this time of year, and in the southern hemisphere, which experiences winter.
The analysis, carried out by scientists from NOAA’s American Centers for Environmental Information, showed that the global average temperature of the land and ocean surface in August 2023 was 1.25 ºC above the 20th century average of 15.6 ºC.
“Last month was not only the hottest August on record, but also the world’s 45th consecutive August and the 534th consecutive month with temperatures above the 20th century average,” says NOAA Chief Scientist Sarah Kapnick.
Four continents – Africa, Asia, North America and South America – and the Arctic region had the hottest August ever recorded in the last 174 years. In Europe and Oceania, this was the second hottest August in the entire historical series.
The research also shows that, since April this year, global sea surface temperatures have reached a record high in relation to the standard average. In August, this record was a rise of 1.03 ºC.
“Global marine heatwaves and a growing El Niño are driving additional warming this year, but as long as emissions continue to drive a steady march of background warming, we expect new records to be broken in the coming years,” warns Sarah Kapnick .
