The Health Department of the Federal District (SES-DF) signed a contract with Hospital São Mateus, part of the complementary network, to reduce the waiting list by carrying out 424 total thyroidectomy surgeries, extirpation of intrathoracic goiter and partial thyroidectomy. The contract is valid for 12 months, which can be extended, and also provides for pre- and post-operative consultations, pre-anesthetics and hospitalizations, if necessary. Published on Official Gazette of the Federal District (DODF) This Thursday (21), the agreement has an investment of more than R$ 2.7 million.

The gateway for those who suspect thyroid disease is the Basic Health Units (UBSs), where the first care takes place. If medically indicated, the patient is referred to specialized outpatient clinics. District Technical Reference (RTD) for endocrinology, Flávia Franca Melo explains that, for each case, the best treatment will be indicated, which may be through medication or thyroid removal, based on tests such as hormonal levels, aspiration puncture and ultrasound .

“When the patient discovers that they have a thyroid nodule, depending on the size and characteristics, a puncture must be performed. Both the UBS clinician and the endocrinologist can request it. If the result shows that the nodule is malignant, the patient is recommended to undergo surgery”, explains the doctor. She adds that self-examination of the thyroid and monitoring by professionals are important to detect the disease early.

Thyroid malfunction is related to hormone production, which can be excessive or deficient. Self-examination may reveal some anatomical changes in the neck region, suggesting the presence of nodules, but it is not capable of detecting hormonal changes, which can only be diagnosed through complementary tests.

The total value of the GDF investment exceeds R$2.7 million

Symptoms

The thyroid is located in the neck region and regulates metabolism, heart rate, body temperature, attention and concentration, sleep, mood, among other functions.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism, when hormone production is deficient, include fatigue, daytime drowsiness, constipation, weak nails, hair loss, cold and dry skin, bloating, weight gain, among others. In hyperthyroidism, the person may experience agitation, nervousness, insomnia, tachycardia, hand tremors, increased intestinal transit/diarrhea, weight loss.

Process

SES-DF’s special purchasing advisor, Helberth Gonçalves Macau highlights that, to be selected by the notice, the contracted hospital needs to maintain economic-financial and fiscal qualification requirements, in addition to meeting criteria such as service structure and opinion in accordance with Surveillance standards Sanitary.

“The notice goes through a prescribed legal process and allows all companies that provide this type of service in the region, and that meet the established requirements, to become accredited”, he states. “Among the requirements, we analyze, for example, the issuance of inspection reports, whether the hospital can meet the expected quantity, whether it has the structure to support ICU (Intensive Care Unit) beds.”

Later this year, SES-DF also launched other notices aimed at surgeries in the areas of ophthalmology, coloproctology, otorhinolaryngology, urology and varicose veins. In total, there will be more than 7 thousand procedures throughout 2023 and 2024.
