Technology plays an increasingly crucial role in ensuring women’s safety when using public and private transport, such as those offered by apps. Several initiatives are emerging to combat harassment and create appropriate environments for women during their travels.
This is the case with initiatives such as the “Guarded bus stop” campaign, created by Eletromídia, and the 99 action, which makes donations for trips to a women’s police station, for example.
Eletromídia’s recent advertising campaign in Campinas installed totems with digital sensors at bus stops to detect whether women are alone at night. In this situation, they can make video calls in real time to call a call center and receive support while waiting for public transport.
The campaign is based on research showing that many women are afraid to go out alone at night. During activation in Campinas, there was an average of 150 calls per night.
Due to the positive impact of the action, the company plans to permanently install these interactive totems at 100 bus stops in Campinas, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro
More initiatives
Still in relation to public transport, other initiatives seek to promote the safety of women on buses.
In Belo Horizonte, for example, the harassment button is activated on average once every 20 days. The device was designed to report cases of sexual harassment on public transport.
In Campinas, passengers will find the safety device available on the application of the city’s Municipal Development Company, Emdec, through the Bela project (Emergency Button in the Fight against Harassment). To access the resource, users need to register initially with personal information, allowing access to their cell phone’s location at all times.
In the same vein, technology called Nina allows victims or witnesses of sexual harassment on public transport in Fortaleza to report incidents quickly and simply. This can be done through the Meu Ônibus app or via the WhatsApp number (85) 9 3300-7001. With the new version of the tool, recently launched, it is possible to attach photos and videos to the report.
Transport apps
Regarding women’s safety in transport, one of the most notable innovations comes from 99, which donates rides to women’s police stations. Through this initiative, passengers can choose these locations as their destination, ensuring a safe way to reach authorities in cases of emergency.
The collaboration between 99 and “Justiceiras” introduced an online support network for women in vulnerable situations. Through a simple button on the app, women, whether drivers or passengers, can request help in cases of physical, psychological, moral, sexual or property violence. This provides a quick response in times of crisis.
In turn, the 99Mulher feature offers partner drivers the freedom to choose to receive calls only from female passengers. This not only empowers female drivers, but also creates a safer environment for female passengers, eliminating gender-related concerns.
Technology is also present with the support of artificial intelligence (AI). Pítia and Athena technologies identify passengers at risk and direct rides to well-evaluated drivers. This innovation significantly reduced incidences of harassment.
