The Federation of Agriculture and Livestock of the State of Santa Catarina (Faesc) said it was concerned about the decision of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) not to recognize the thesis of the time frame in relation to the demarcation of indigenous lands. “The impacts of this new understanding of the STF, especially for Santa Catarina, are worrying, as the State, which has only 1.1% of the national territory, is basically made up of small rural producers, and it will be these rural families who, once again, will be threatened in the face of the STF’s new understanding”, he stated in a statement.

For the entity, the time frame thesis “under no circumstances takes away the rights of indigenous people, it only guarantees an objective criterion for the purposes of implementing a demarcation policy, without taking away the property rights of rural families.”

“Hope now rests in the Legislative Branch, as the plenary of the Chamber of Deputies approved the bill on the occupation of land by indigenous peoples (PL 2903/2023), a matter that is currently being processed in the Federal Senate – and, if approved, it will certainly bring peace in the countryside, without violating the property rights of rural families and without disrespecting the rights of original peoples”, he said.
