Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski worked to bolster U.S. support for Ukraine in a quick visit to Washington on Thursday. He delivered an upbeat message about the progress of the war while facing new questions about the flow of U.S. dollars that has been helping to maintain its troops in the fight against Russian forces.

The Ukrainian leader received favorable comments about the help he says he needs to avoid defeat. Zelenski arrived at the Capitol with a firm message in private talks with Republican and Democratic leaders. The Ukrainians have a solid war plan and “are winning,” the lawmakers quoted him assuring them, at a time when the world is paying attention to Western support for Kiev.

US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden welcomed Zelenski and his wife, Olena Zelenski, later at the White House, where Zelenski described thanking members of Congress for their “great, huge support.”

“The American people are determined that we will do everything we can to make sure the world is with you,” Biden assured Zelensky, projecting the White House’s support for Ukraine to other nations as well. “That’s our overwhelming goal.”

On Capitol Hill, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who faces opposition among far-right Republicans aligned with former President Donald Trump in supporting Ukraine, notably chose not to join House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in greeting to the Ukrainian president when he arrived.

McCarthy also confirmed that he refused Zelensky’s request for a joint session of Congress, as happened during the Ukrainian president’s visit to Washington last year, saying there was no time for that in a short space of time.
