Beware of Fonseca
Porto Alegra, RS (Folhapress)

The most recently identified victim of the flood in Vale do Taquari, in Rio Grande do Sul, left nine orphaned children. The body of domestic worker Jaqueline Medianeira Fagundes, 45, was found around 4pm on Tuesday (19) by firefighters from Bento Gonçalves and Porto Alegre.

After Jaqueline’s burial this Wednesday (20), her eldest daughter, Tainara Letícia da Silva, 28, said that she will ask for custody of her three younger brothers: a 13-year-old girl and two boys aged 7 and 8. The family lives in Guaporé (RS), in the mountains of Rio Grande do Sul.

Jaqueline’s body was in a car tied to a seat belt. The vehicle was found in the Taquari River, 300 meters from the Santa Bárbara bridge, in São Valentim do Sul (RS) – the structure was washed away by the floods on September 5th.

The vehicle was sunk upright, with the front towards the bottom of the river, and was located by search teams using equipment that detects submerged objects.

Jaqueline was with her boyfriend at the time of the storm. The body of Rogério Godofredo de Oliveira, 37, was found attached to branches on the riverbank on September 6 in a district of Santa Tereza (RS).

She was visiting her boyfriend, a resident of Santa Tereza, when the couple was surprised on the road by the storm. For the family, they may not have realized that the bridge had been collapsed by the force of the water and, as a result, they fell into the Taquari River.

Rogério had bought the car, an Escort, the day before. Jaqueline was accompanying her boyfriend, who worked as a plasterer and was on his way to a job in the region when the accident occurred.

Despite being found on the 6th, Rogério’s body was only identified on the 8th. It was then that his mother informed Jaqueline’s family that she would probably be among the victims of the flood. Until then, Tainara and her brothers had hoped that their mother and her boyfriend were simply incommunicado.

After almost a week without news, the children began to fear that the body was in an unidentified IML (Medico-Legal Institute) and went on a pilgrimage through institutions in search of the body and collecting DNA.

The hypothesis that the car could have crashed in Taquari was reinforced by security cameras that captured the Escort leaving the city before the storm. However, the car spent two weeks sunk before the tragedy was confirmed.

Jaqueline’s death gives a new direction to an ongoing family drama. Jaqueline’s children come from three different relationships. The three eldest daughters, from the first relationship, had already left home. Jaqueline lived with two sons.

Of the four youngest children, one was in the care of a godmother. The three others were recently sent to a shelter until Jaqueline recovered from a financial crisis that led to her electricity and water being cut off.

Now, Tainara, who is married and mother of a three-year-old child, intends to ask the court for custody of her three younger brothers. The godmother who takes care of one of the children will also ask for custody of the child. “My mother had her problems, but she had a gigantic heart and I learned that from her. I can’t leave them (the brothers) in this place, in these conditions, sad because they lost their mother”, says Tainara.

To do this, she intends to count on the help of social assistance structures that have been established in Vale do Taquari since the tragedy and mobilize charitable actions.

According to the latest bulletin from the Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul, there are 49 confirmed deaths and nine people are still missing. There are 753 homeless.
