Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said this Wednesday (20) that his country will no longer supply weapons to Ukraine, after the government “urgently” summoned the Ukrainian ambassador to protest against President Volodimir Zelensky’s statements. at the UN.
“We are not supplying any weapons to Ukraine, as we are now arming Poland with the most modern weapons,” Morawiecki responded to a journalist’s question about whether Poland would support Ukraine militarily and humanitarianly despite the grain-related conflict.
The prime minister did not reveal when Poland, one of Ukraine’s main weapons suppliers, stopped supplying them, nor whether this was linked to the grain conflict.
“We are mainly focused on modernizing and rapidly arming the Polish Army so that it becomes one of the most powerful land armies in Europe in a very short term,” he explained.
He also said that the military center located in the city of Rzeszow (southeast), where Western material destined for Ukraine passes, is operating normally.
Before the announcement, Poland had “urgently” summoned Ukraine’s ambassador to protest Zelensky’s statements at the UN.
The Polish Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, who received the Ukrainian diplomat, denounced a “false (…) and particularly unjustifiable thesis in relation to Poland, which has supported Ukraine since the first days of the war”, according to the statement from the Ministry.
Tensions between Warsaw and Kiev are due to a conflict over trade in Ukrainian cereals, the import of which has been banned in Poland to protect the interests of its farmers.
The dispute has become more tense in recent days.
On Friday, the European Union announced that it had put an end to the ban on imports of Ukrainian cereals enacted in May by five states in the bloc (Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Romania) due to the distortions they caused in their local markets.
Poland and Hungary challenged the decision and imposed unilateral embargoes, to which Kiev responded by announcing a future appeal before the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Morawiecki warned that he would expand the list of banned Ukrainian products if Kiev intensified the conflict over cereals.
Ukrainian diplomats urged Poland to “leave emotions aside” and adopt a “constructive” approach to this dispute.
