Missing school due to lack of sanitary pads is one of the consequences of menstrual poverty. A survey of seven public schools in the Federal District reveals reflections of this problem, as explained by nursing professor Vanessa Alvarenga, who led the survey with academics on the course.
“Many girls miss school because they don’t have the materials or structure to deal with this moment. This ultimately leads to school absenteeism,” she says.
Nursing students Letícia Seabra and Juliana de Medeiros understand that the topic is not talked about and discussed enough.
The survey “Management of menstrual hygiene among students in the Brazilian capital and associated factors for school absenteeism” had more than 500 responses from girls and young people between 11 and 19 years old.
The research team even formulated a booklet developed with topics on the menstrual cycle, data on menstrual poverty and care to avoid infections and diseases.
