Around 45% of services provided by Américas Amigas throughout Brazil are for women under 50 years old or over 69 years old – the range from 50 to 69 years old is the standard for breast cancer screening in public services and Américas Amigas follows the recommendations from medical societies (from age 40 onwards).
In Brazil, the entity has already carried out more than 35 thousand hours of qualification and training for health professionals in the public and private spheres, provided more than 1 million mammograms and carried out more than 68 thousand Breast Cancer detection and diagnosis exams.
Based on the service history of Américas Amigas, a civil entity dedicated to providing access to screening and diagnosis of breast cancer to the most vulnerable populations, approximately 45% of women who present a positive diagnosis for breast cancer are under 50 years of age or over 69, that is, outside the highest incidence range (public services carry out screening between 50 and 69 years old). The NGO’s goal is to carry out complete diagnoses (mammograms and complementary exams, if necessary) in the shortest period of time – as early diagnosis and immediate initiation of treatment, if positive, can determine the chances of curing the disease by up to 95%. %.
Américas Amigas has a mobile unit that travels to cities throughout Brazil, mainly the North and Northeast, as well as more vulnerable communities (at the end of August it was in Complexo do Alemão, in Rio de Janeiro; and has just finished the tour, with a trailer equipped with mammographs, throughout the Bahian hinterland). In most cases, women undergo their exams in these mobile units for the first time, regardless of age.
The entity’s operations take place through donations of mammograms, donations of exams and training of professionals who work in public and philanthropic hospitals. Just to give you an idea, Américas Amigas has already provided free care to more than 17 thousand women in the Northeast region and more than 6 thousand in the North region. In addition, there are already more than 17 thousand hours of training for health professionals carried out in the Northeast and another 6 thousand hours in the North region.
In 2022, in the Legal Amazon region alone, which prioritized care in indigenous and riverside communities, more than 5 thousand women were served, 33 of which were diagnosed with Breast Cancer. In 2023, the NGO has already carried out 2 commissions in this region in partnership with a navy ship with donations to clinics and hospitals.
“By donating not only mammograms but also consultations and all other tests necessary to clarify the diagnosis, Américas Amigas gives these populations a real chance of detecting the disease early when the chances of cure are up to 95%”, says Mirna Hallay, General Manager of Américas Amigas.
