The president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), said this Monday, the 18th, that Brazil today “fortunately has the leadership of a president of the Republic who cares” about the environmental agenda. Since the beginning of his term, Pacheco has gotten closer to the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The appointment of the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, for example, is attributed to him.
Pacheco traveled with Lula to China, for example. He has also publicly praised the president, especially regarding his economic agenda and environmental policy.
At this Monday’s event, a seminar organized by the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp) and the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) in New York, the president of the Senate said that Brazil has a “unique opportunity” and “the ability to contribute to the effort in favor of the planet”.
“Sustainable development is a global priority and the task of a generation, it is the challenge of our time. The current context presents itself in a very particular way to Brazil and there is no doubt that there is a serious, real and effective commitment from public and political agents with the sustainable development of our country”, stated Pacheco.
He defended that the protection of biomes and the fight against illegal fires are priorities to guarantee the preservation of Brazilian forests, which he characterized as a “fundamental resource for mitigating the effects of climate change.”
“We need, first of all, to protect our biomes. Our forest cover covers an area larger than the sum of all the countries in the European Union. The carbon absorption potential, temperature regulatory capacity and its role in regulating hydrological cycles make of our forests a fundamental resource, absolutely indispensable, in mitigating the effects of climate change. Combating illegal deforestation of our biomes appears to be a primordial task”, he said
The president of the Senate cited a series of proposals being processed in Congress relating to the environmental agenda, such as the regulation of green hydrogen, the carbon credit market and the anticipation of the goals of the Paris Agreement.
“In my administration, we approved a significant project, the project that anticipates by five years the voluntary national commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions established in the Paris Agreement. The new goals, of reducing emissions by 43% by 2025 and 50% by 2030, are now being processed in the Chamber”, cited Pacheco.
The president of the Senate highlighted that both the Chamber and the Senate are working on a text to regulate the carbon credit market.
According to him, “Congress has been working with the Executive to consolidate a text capable of creating incentives for a more sustainable production model that will contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases.” Senator Leila Barros (PDT-DF) is the rapporteur in the Senate.
Pacheco also highlighted the regulation of bioinputs and the agreement signed between the ruralist caucus and the Lula government to approve the proposal.
“Regulating the sector is important for us to make the transition from inputs of fossil origin to biological ones. It is also essential for us to develop our own industry, reducing external dependence”, he stated.
The president of the Senate, as well as other authorities, including the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), accompanies President Lula in the delegation that traveled to the United States for the UN General Assembly.
