A man and a woman were detained in Patos, in the Sertão da Paraíba region, on suspicion of torture and abandonment of an incapacitated person. The victims were their own children, a pair of twins just one year and two months old, who, according to information from the Paraíba Civil Police, had been suffering extreme physical abuse. The case began to come to light on Friday (15).

Around 10 am that day, the Paraíba Military Police received a call to respond to an incident at a residence in the city. When they arrived at the scene, the police found the two children completely alone at home, without their parents present. It was then that the Guardianship Council and the Social Assistance Reference Center (Cras) of Patos were called to take care of the children.

When the parents were finally located, they were all taken to the Patos Police Station. At the scene, delegate Paulo Ênio found that one of the children, the girl, had several injuries caused by burns. According to the delegate, the mother is suspected of having burned the child with boiling water and a hair straightener, causing injuries to several parts of the body, including the head.

The parents underwent a custody hearing over the weekend, in which the court ordered the preventive detention of both the father and mother. The father was transferred to the Patos Prison, while the mother was sent to the Patos Women’s Prison.

The delegate emphasized that injuries to children were frequent and serious. Therefore, the children will now be looked after by other family members, but with direct supervision from the Guardianship Council and Cras, ensuring their well-being and safety.
