About to turn 10 years old, the Brazilian International Convention Center (CICB) currently has 33 employees, which represents 37% of the workforce. Of these, the majority are in leadership positions.

“We have always given priority to hiring women at CICB. This female workforce is essential in all organizations, as they are versatile, loyal, have determination and courage to face everyday situations in the business environment”, explains Fernanda Vargas, director of center.

Currently, CICB is the largest convention center in Latin America and has large spaces to host different types of events, with rooms with capacity for up to 6 thousand people and the possibility of more than one event per day.

And part of the center’s success is due, according to Fernanda, to the women in the group, who have always been an important force for the group. “We have been part of the Center’s essence since the beginning, when we were just an events company. We worked with great dedication and made a difference so that CICB became what it is today, a space of excellence”, says the director.

In total, there are seven areas coordinated by women, namely the Financial, Suppliers, Commercial, Operational, Accommodation, Governance and Communication/Marketing sectors.

Without a doubt, we will have more and more women occupying large spaces in the job market. We are taking great steps to equalize this difference”, said the director. The company, therefore, serves as an example for other organizations.

Competence first

According to the strategic planner and consultant of the business management group, Marcos Cumagai, women are at the roots of the company, and the work of all of them has guaranteed the center’s current success. “It has always been a characteristic of the group, even before the CICB, to have female leaders. With the advent of the structuring and opening of the CICB, this pre-existing culture migrated here. And for us it is very natural. It’s already part of the company’s DNA,” he agrees.

“We are a non-profit entity, so women are here, with the level of responsibility they have (in their respective positions), out of pure competence. (…) Women are the ones who bring the results we seek”, added the strategic planner.

The company’s culture, according to him, is to value the skills that each one of them has. “For us it is normal not to have any type of discrimination, that meritocracy and competence are the tones that determine the positions”, stated Cumagai. As he highlighted, this is a natural company policy. “Here they have the technical competence, discipline and consistency to carry out activities and complete them successfully”, he highlighted.

“When technical competence is combined with all the undeniable and real attributes of women, such as care and attention to detail, empathy, multifunctionality, process vision, among others, we have a winning team. It’s the secret to success”, concluded Cumagai.

A CICB

On September 30, 2013, the Brazilian International Convention Center (CICB) was inaugurated, with the Brazilian Congress of Bariatric Surgery. “From the beginning, the vision and desire was for CICB to become a national reference”, highlights Cumagai.

According to the planner, the group is on track to achieve this goal, proceeding organically and gradually. “There are still segments to conquer, but there is no doubt that we are recognized throughout Brazil as one of the best or the best center for congresses and conventions.”

The medical sector stands out, a sector in which the execution of events at the CICB has become an example of excellence, having brought together, in recent years, a large part of the largest health congresses in the country. “We have regained this place within the medical sector, and now we are a priority destination for conferences in this area. This allowed the capital to be reinserted into a sector that was dormant in the city”, points out the planner.

One of the structure’s differences is the different formatting possibilities, both for private rooms and large halls. In the 81.9 thousand m², more than 10 km of detachable walls, acoustic partitions, can be relocated in more than 6 thousand ways. “They work like a big puzzle, which can be put together in the way that best meets customer demands. This doesn’t exist anywhere else in South America,” says Cumagai.

The main focus is on national and regional congresses and conventions, with rooms for large audiences. However, with the flexibility and construction technique that CICB has, the space also allows several other types of events to be organized.

Among the markets to be recovered for the capital are finance, technology, pharmacy, agriculture, among others. “It was work that required a lot of direct commitment from investors. When we talk about 10 years, it seems like a long time, but this construction was done in a very consistent and safe way.”

“We had the understanding that one day the CICB would be recognized as a great center, not only nationally, but also internationally. The first stage, which involved national recognition, has already been consolidated in the medical sector. The focus is now on the pharmaceutical sector, with events promoted by large companies in the area”, adds Cumagai.
