“A fun person, super polite, and, above all, a companion”, this is how Luciano Olival, surgeon, will remember his fellow doctor Roland Montenegro Costa, who died in the plane crash, in Barcelos, Amazonas, this Saturday (16 /9). The plane he was on crashed with other people who were part of a group of sport fishermen.

“I received the message while going to duty. I was taken by surprise when I looked at the news. It was a trip he always took close to his birthday, which is at the beginning of October”, Luciano tells Jornal de Brasília, with regret. Roland, he said, was like a father, and taught him a lot about surgery over the years. “We met in 2008, through a mutual friend, and I, still in college, accompanied him with the intention of becoming a surgeon too. I graduated at the end of 2009, and started following his surgeries”, recalls the doctor. “In 2015 I started working with him, we became partners and we developed an almost father-son relationship. He taught me practically everything I know about surgery”, says Luciano.

Roland was retired from the Hospital de Base do Distrito Federal (HBDF) and is considered a reference in digestive system surgery, having been a pioneer of transplants in the DF. He also served as a teaching professor in general surgery at the health unit and worked in a private practice, operating in some hospitals in Brasília. “He always put medicine first. This has always been a priority in his life. He leaves a unique legacy of dedication and passion”, says Luciano Olival. “That was what Roland loved most in the world. He dedicated himself until the end of his life”, added the doctor.

Born in Viana (MA), the victim graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Maranhão, in 1978. Between 1979 and 1981, Roland Montenegro completed a medical residency in general surgery at HBDF. Between 1991 and 1993, he lived and worked in the United States, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at the largest multiorgan transplant center in North America, where he completed training in liver transplantation. Among his greatest achievements is carrying out the first liver transplant in Brasília, carried out after taking over as head of the Surgery Unit at Hospital de Base and leading a multidisciplinary transplant team.

Among all of Roland’s great achievements, there is also a new technique for pancreas surgery, which bears his surname. The Montenegro technique, for pancreatogastric anastomosis, was described in 2005 and presented at the European Congress of the International Society for Hepato-Pancreatobiliary Surgery, in Heidelberg, Germany.

According to Luciano, the doctor was planning to leave the country next month, for a medical Congress, and was super excited. “I talked to myself every day about this trip. Work was his greatest passion”, laments his colleague.

Roland was the father of four children and collected tributes on his vast CV. Among them are the “President Juscelino Kubitschek Civil Police Merit Diploma”, received in 2003; the title of “Honorary Citizen of Brasília”, in 2006; and “Best of Medicine in Brazil”, in 2007. “You will hardly find patients or co-workers who have anything to complain about. He dedicated himself until the end of his life”, comments Dr. Luciano Olival.

The plane that crashed with Roland was carrying tourists who were in the Amazon to practice sport fishing. The information was revealed by the Secretary of Public Security of Amazonas, Vinícius Almeida, during a press conference held on Saturday night. “When I heard about the plane crash, I called a friend of ours and told him the news. At first, I didn’t believe it, even though I saw his name on the passenger list. So far it’s been kind of hard to accept. It was tragic and abrupt”, says Dr. Olival. The aircraft had left Manaus bound for Barcelos, around 400 km from the capital of Amazonas. So far, the cause of the fall is not known, but at the time of the accident, it was raining. In total, 14 people died, including 12 tourists, the pilot and the co-pilot. Reports are that there would not have been enough runway to land the aircraft at Barcelos airport, but an official conclusion depends on investigations. “The report is that there was not (enough) runway to land”, he detailed.

As Lucinete Soares, the victim’s wife, reports, Roland always made this trip three to four times a year. “It was one of his pleasures, a moment just for him with his friends, he felt invigorated, those were his words”, says the widow. This time, however, the weather in the region of the trip worried her. “I was very tense and worried about the weather in Manaus, and that didn’t bring me peace of mind. He was also apprehensive, I felt this after a call at 10am on 9/16”, recalls Lucinete. “When I received the news from Dr. Luciano, my floor fell, I didn’t accept this news”, laments his wife.

What remains now is the memory of an admirable, true and friendly husband. “I’m grateful to have been part of his life, my everything. Very special for me and for many. He was a vibrant being, full of life, captivating and loved and admired by everyone,” he reports. “I will remember all our unforgettable moments, happiness enchanted us”, concluded Lucinete.

Iges regrets the loss of the server

This Sunday (17), the Institute of Strategic Health Management of the Federal District (Iges-DF) issued a note of condolence over Roland’s death. In the note, the Institute deeply regretted the irreparable loss of the professional, offering condolences to his friends and family. “He left leaving a void in our hearts”, emphasizes Iges-DF.
