The government leader in the Senate, Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), stated this Sunday (17) that the Tax Reform must pass through the Senate by October 15th.

By this deadline, the text must be voted on in the CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission) and in the plenary. Wagner accompanies President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) during his trip to New York (USA) to participate in the United Nations General Assembly.

The senator stated that the rapporteur is still working on the text. “Several things can cause a headache. The Chamber approved it quite quickly,” he told journalists, highlighting that there are many complaints from sectors.

Regarding the pressure for new tax rates to be included in the PEC (proposed amendment to the Constitution), Wagner stated that the idea is absurd.

“We have a bad habit in Brazil of thinking that for something to work, it needs to be in the Constitution.”

The government leader also said that the proposal should not be sliced. The idea has been raised as an option to facilitate the approval of points that face less resistance.
Wagner is expected to accompany the president in a meeting with businesspeople this evening. The dinner, offered by Fiesp (Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo), should also be attended by the entity’s leader, Josué Gomes da Silva, minister Fernando Haddad (Finance), and the presidents of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP -AL), and from the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG).

According to Wagner, Lula should listen more than speak during the meeting.

The president arrived at his hotel in New York at around 11pm local time. A group of supporters were waiting for him, singing songs and accompanied by a small drum kit.

According to the press office, Lula should not have any agendas this Sunday other than meetings with businesspeople. So far, the PT member’s only confirmed bilateral meeting is a meeting with American President Joe Biden on Wednesday. Afterwards, the two participate in an event to launch an initiative on decent work in the 21st century.

There is an informal request for a meeting between Lula and the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski. According to Wagner, the Brazilian government offered two date options, but there is still no confirmation.

The two have a turbulent relationship. On the margins of the G7, at the beginning of the year, there was an attempt at a meeting, but it ended up frustrated. Each side blames the other.

The government’s foreign policy team says that there are more than 50 requests for bilateral meetings and participation in events for Lula on the margins of the UN. According to Wagner, it is a “good problem”, but delicate, to prevent a possible refusal from being misinterpreted.

Lula opens the high-level debate at the annual United Nations meeting this Tuesday. Traditionally, Brazil is the first to speak.
