A Cerrado that many are unaware of was presented to the public by the Brasília Botanical Garden (JBB). This Sunday morning (17), environmentalist Vinicius Rossignoli spoke with park goers about the importance of the biome typical of the Federal District. The lecture marked the end of the first edition of Cerrado Week.
“The Cerrado is the oldest active biome in the world. It is the birthplace of Brazil’s waters, where the country’s three main river basins are located. Few know this”, commented Vinícius. “When we think about conservation, we think about the Amazon. But the truth is that, without the Cerrado, the Amazon dies.”
Former participant of the programMasterchef, Vinícius specializes in cuisine from the Cerrado, a biome that, according to the chef, has the greatest biodiversity of foods in the world, with more than a thousand flavors. He took the opportunity to talk about how the use of local inputs for food directly impacts environmental conservation.
“Tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, peppers… None of these are native to Brazil. To plant these foods here, it is necessary to adapt the land, which causes a great impact on the soil”, warned Vinícius. “The Cerrado has very interesting foods in terms of flavor. And they are available literally in the middle of the street.”

The Brasília Botanical Garden dedicated an entire week to the biome that surrounds the DF. On Monday (11), a breakfast with Cerrado cuisine opened the event, which also included a performance by the Ativozes senior choir and story telling led by Nyedja Gennari.
The JBB Center of Excellence brought an exhibition by artists Eugênio Monteiro, Djavan, Felipe Ribeiro and Nemm Soares, with works that portray the Cerrado. In addition, an exhibition on electronic waste was set up in the Visitor Center, which now has a Voluntary Drop-off Point for those who wish to dispose of materials such as batteries, televisions, notebooks and old cell phones.
According to JBB’s technical-scientific superintendent, Cristiano Monteiro, the results of the first edition of Cerrado Week were very positive – around 8 thousand people participated in activities organized by the entity throughout the week.
“The main focus of our actions was environmental education. We show that this is not an agenda for the future, it is an agenda for the present”, stated Monteiro. “More than 50% of the native vegetation in the Cerrado no longer exists, hence the importance of raising awareness among the population about the preservation of this biome”, he added.
