A tradition in several Brazilian capitals, university publishers’ book fairs are coming to Brasília. From Tuesday (19) to Thursday (21), the University of Brasília (UnB) promotes the 1st Book Festival. The event, on the mezzanine of Minhocão Sul, debuts with a focus on a nucleus that produces critical knowledge: black thinkers and authors.

“This theme is a way to spark the debate on the participation of black women in all spheres of interest. So that this protagonism of black women could become an agenda for reflection, both within the university and in the Federal District community as a whole”, explains the director of Editora UnB, Germana Henriques.

With 35 participating publishers, the 1st Book Festival will have four launches, four lectures, a round table, a workshop and a short course. There will also be an exhibition of illustrations chosen in the competition organized by Editora UnB and the publication of the results of the essay notice. In addition to the four books to be launched, there will be a joint launch of works by the Núcleo de Escritoras Pretas Maria Firmina dos Reis, made up of university professors.

Among some prominent topics in the debates are the analysis of the racial quota policy; the motto “black lives matter”; the relationship between black bodies and homosexuality; and an analysis of racism as a cultural neurosis, inspired by the work of anthropologist Lélia González.

All participating publishers will sell books with a discount of at least 30%. In the case of Editora UnB, prices will have greater reductions, of 40% to 50%.

Parallel to the book fair, there will be the Feira da Viração, where UnB employees will sell handicrafts, jewelry and used items. “That’s why we call the event the Book Festival, because we want it to be much more than a fair”, explains Germana.

Postponement

According to the director of Editora UnB, the idea for the Book Festival had been in the works since 2016. However, a restructuring at the university and at the publisher itself postponed the initiative. The first edition was planned in 2019 and would take place in 2020, but the covid-19 pandemic postponed the event again.

“This will be the first edition. The idea is that the Book Festival takes place every year, always in the second semester. As in university publishers in different capitals”, explains Germana. “We want this event, which will be much more than a simple fair, to become a tradition in the Federal District.”
