Like the public that packed movie theaters, the heart of the 2024 Oscars currently has two owners: Barbie, by Greta Gerwig, and Oppenheimer, by Christopher Nolan. Or rather, suitors: despite the blockbuster duo being an almost certain bet among the nominees for the main categories at next year’s awards, they haven’t won anything yet. And they should win strong competitors, who have already participated or will be in festivals that serve as a thermometer for the Oscars (Venice, London and Telluride among them) and will debut by the end of the year in the American market.
Check out the list of ten films that should premiere in the coming months, with an eye on an Oscar nomination:
1. Poor creatures
The film is the reunion of the trio formed by Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, actress Emma Stone and screenwriter Tony McNamara, who produced the award-winning The Favorite in 2018. This time, Stone plays a young woman brought back to life by an eccentric scientist , in a reinterpretation of the classic Frankenstein myth. The film, which hits Brazilian cinemas in January, premiered in Venice and won the Golden Lion (the festival’s main prize).
2. Maestro
Biopic of American conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein – author of the score for Love, Sublime Love -, directed and starring Bradley Cooper. The film, presented in Venice, focuses on the bisexual musician’s relationship with his wife, actress Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan). And it has already caused controversy, with accusations that the prosthetic nose worn by Cooper was anti-Semitic. Bernstein’s family and the Jewish Anti-Defamation League in the US refuted the attacks. The premiere, on Netflix, will be on December 20th.
3. Saltburn
New work by English filmmaker Emerald Fennell, winner of the Oscar for original screenplay for Beautiful Revenge in 2021. The film will be presented in October at the London Festival and follows a young Oxford university student during a summer in the mansion of the seductive family of a fellow aristocrat and The cast features Oscar nominees Barry Keoghan, Carey Mulligan and Rosamund Pike, as well as Jacob Elordi, from the series Euphoria. Scheduled to premiere in the United States in November, the film has been described as sexy and spicy. And, for an Academy currently in transition – neither radical nor too conservative -, which prefers Everything in Everywhere at the Same Time to The Fabelmans, a little pepper in the eyes might even please.
4. Ferrari
Biopic of Italian tycoon Enzo Ferrari, owner and creator of the famous team, directed by Michael Mann (The Informant) and starring Adam Driver. The actor attended the film’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival, alongside Penélope Cruz and Shailene Woodley, also in the cast. In Brazil, the premiere will be in February.
5. The Rejects
Eternal chronicler of misunderstood white men, filmmaker Alexander Payne returns with the story of a sullen history teacher, who becomes attached to a troubled student held back at the boarding school where he teaches during the end of year festivities. This kind of Christmas Breakfast Club was Presented at Telluride at the end of August, it stars Paul Giamatti and premieres in January in Brazil.
6. The Killer
After House of Cards, Mindhunter and Mank, director David Fincher continues his artistic residency at Netflix, returning to his criminal roots with The Killer. Adapted from Alexis Nolent’s graphic novel by Se7en’s Andrew Kevin Walker, the film features the missing Michael Fassbender as the titular killer, who begins to develop a crisis of conscience. The film, which premiered in Venice and arrives on the platform in November, also stars Tilda Swinton and Brazilian Sophie Charlotte.
7. Rustin
Feature about the black American activist Bayard Rustin, organizer of the iconic March on Washington of the Civil Rights Movement in 1963, whose role was left in the background in historical accounts because of his homosexuality. If you still doubt the production’s ability to reach the Oscars, the film is directed by George C. Wolfe (The Supreme Voice of the Blues), starring Colman Domingo (Emmy winner for Euphoria) and produced by none other than the couple Barack and Michelle Obama in partnership with Netflix, where it premieres in November.
8. Two shots of Paul Mescal
The internet’s current sweetheart, actor Paul Mescal, who received a nomination for the 2023 Oscar for Aftersun, returns with two films with the award’s style. He stars in the science fiction film Foe, as a husband invited to migrate to a space colony, leaving behind a clone to accompany his wife (Saoirse Ronan) – yes, very similar to that episode of Black Mirror, only with good actors. And, in All of Us Strangers, by English director Andrew Haigh, he seduces the protagonist played by Andrew Scott (from Fleabag), a lonely screenwriter visited by the ghosts of his dead parents. In the United States, Foe premieres in October and All of Us Strangers in December.
9. Lee
This is a long shot, as there is still no distributor and no scheduled release date, but the pedigree of the production makes it impossible not to include it on this list. The film tells the story of Lee Miller, a fashion photographer who became a correspondent during World War II. She is played by none other than Kate Winslet, heading a cast that also includes Marion Cotillard (Piaf), Josh O’Connor (The Crown), Alexander Skarsgard (Big Little Lies) and Andrea Riseborough (nominated for this year’s Oscar for A Big Luck). It is directed by Ellen Kuras, director of photography for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
10. Napoleon
The epic directed by filmmaker Ridley Scott is one of the big bets for the awards season. Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) plays the iconic French emperor, alongside Vanessa Kirby (nominated for Pieces of a Woman) as his wife, Josephine. It premieres in November in Brazil.
