President Lula (PT) arrived in New York (USA) accompanied by the first lady, sociologist Rosângela Lula da Silva, known as Janja, late this Saturday night (16).

The presidential plane landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport around 11 p.m. Lula and Janja left the aircraft and headed to a hotel. The Brazilian president will participate in the opening of the 78th General Assembly of the UN (United Nations) next Tuesday (19). Lula will also meet with US President Joe Biden on Wednesday (20).

TRIP THROUGH CUBA

Before heading to New York, Lula participated on Saturday (16) in a G77+China meeting in Havana. During the event, Lula mentioned that the US economic embargo against Cuba is “illegal”.

Lula opened the speeches at the meeting, which has as its theme “Current Development Challenges: Role of Science, Technology and Innovation”.

The president, in the middle of his speech, once again demanded rich countries, saying that it will be necessary to insist that nations fulfill their commitments to the environment.
“We will promote sustainable industrialization, investment in renewable energy, bioeconomy and low-carbon agriculture. We will do this without forgetting that we do not have the same historical debt as rich countries due to global warming,” said Lula.

“On the way between COP-28 in Dubai and COP-30, in the city of Belém (PA), it will be necessary to insist on the implementation of commitments never fulfilled by rich countries.”

During his speech, Lula also called the economic embargo against Cuba “illegal” and said that Brazil is against this policy.

“Cuba has been a defender of fairer global governance. And to this day it is the victim of an illegal economic embargo. Brazil is against any unilateral coercive measure.”
