Roland Montenegro Costa, 70 years old, a retired doctor from the Hospital de Base in the Federal District, was one of the passengers on the plane that crashed in Barcelos, Amazonas, last Saturday (16). The surgeon general and 13 other people died in the plane crash.
Montenegro was a digestive system surgeon, considered one of the first professionals to perform transplants in the federal capital. He still worked in a private practice and operated in some hospitals in Brasília.
“I received the news in an absolutely shocking way that my teacher, friend, master tragically passed away in a plane crash when, as he did every year at this time, he was going to do the second thing he liked most after surgery: fishing. News that shook me and many people in Brasília who had the privilege of learning surgery from one of the biggest names in the field in our city. We lost a great man and a great surgeon. I hope to honor his legacy in the best way I can. Rest in peace Dr. Roland.”, wrote friend and fellow doctor Luciano Olival.
