Founded in 2019, surf park builder Aventuur announced plans to heat a 2.2-hectare lagoon in Auckland, New Zealand, for one such facility, using waste heat from the data center. According to DataCenter Dynamics, the data center itself will be powered by a 7-hectare solar power plant.

The Auckland Surf Park and the data center are due to open in 2025. However, according to the company itself, the first project of its kind is still in the planning stages. The developers report that thanks to some special recirculation system, they will be able to maintain the temperature in the pond at +18-19°C all year round. The expectation is that such conditions will attract more tourists and vacationers.

While it seems like no one has really tried to heat the water in surf lagoons yet, data center pools have been heated for a long time. For example, just this year, a corresponding project was implemented in the New York bath complex, and a British startup plans to heat swimming pools across the country with its data centers. NorthC’s Aalsmeer data center heats a swimming pool in the Netherlands, and in Norway, Sweden and Japan, heat from the data center is sent to fish farms.
