ArcelorMittal proposes the departure of 440 employees without applying a relief contract

ArcelorMittal has proposed the departure of more than 440 workers born between 19962 and 1963 from the Spanish workforce and without applying the replacement contract. The decision of the multinational steel company is linked to the investment that it will have to make to start up the Gijón hybrid electric furnace, which is part of its decarbonization process.

The proposal will be debated again at an upcoming meeting of the Employment Negotiation Commission with union rejection, which sees the measure as “a brutal job amortization.”

Negotiation of the collective agreement

The meeting of the Employment Negotiation Commission at the state level coincided with a day in which unions and companies met for the eighth time around the negotiating table for the collective agreement for the 5,500 workers in the Asturian plants.

According to CCOO, “once again the lack of negotiating capacity and willingness on the part of the company’s management has been evident, which is limited to dealing only with the issue of permits.” This lack of progress in negotiation has led CCOO to propose a schedule of strikes in December to “reverse this humiliating situation,” the union said.
