According to the Cypriot newspaper Filelefteros, the financial auditors in their report pointed out to the head of the island state a specific law that prohibits officials from using state vehicles for personal purposes. The Auditor General of Cyprus added that, in fact, Christodoulides’ children are being put in school with public funds and this is a clear abuse of power. Attempts by the President of Cyprus to justify his action by the need to ensure the safety of his family are unfounded, the report states.
It is not the first time that Christodoulides, who took office less than a year ago, has been involved in financial scandals related to violations of the rules of conduct of officials. Thus, last fall it turned out that the head of Cyprus “forgot” to officially declare the pension he received as a former employee of the national Foreign Ministry, although according to the rules he should have done so. According to Kathimerini newspaper, the opposition in the Cypriot parliament has demanded an explanation why Christodoulides receives both a high salary and a sizeable pension at a time when most Greek Cypriots are facing widespread price increases and struggling to make ends meet. .
In addition, other information that casts a shadow on the president of Cyprus was leaked to the media. As it turned out, Christodoulides’ wife’s personal assistant received large bonuses for alleged overtime in public service. After the audit was carried out and this issue was raised in the Cypriot parliament, the administration of the President of Cyprus quickly revised downwards the amount of the requested bonuses.
