Saudi Arabia said on Monday the 25th that it would agree to stricter supervision of its nuclear activities, a step that could unlock negotiations with the US to establish a uranium enrichment operation in the kingdom.
During the annual General Conference of the United Nations (UN) atomic agency, Saudi Arabia’s Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman reported that Ryad would terminate the basic oversight agreement with the UN Agency and implement a more comprehensive agreement, which gives inspectors much broader powers to inspect nuclear activities.
The Saudi move would give the international community much greater assurance that any nuclear facility operates a purely peaceful program and would not be engaged in trying to produce nuclear fuel for a bomb. The International Atomic Energy Agency has been pressing Saudi Arabia to update its oversight agreement for years as the kingdom has become increasingly open to pursuing a civilian nuclear program.
“This suggests that Saudi Arabia is serious about developing a nuclear program,” said Gregory Brew, an energy analyst at the Eurasia Group consultancy in Washington. The decision will ensure “greater transparency” of its program to ensure it is civil, he added.
