Industry confidence fell in 21 sectors out of a total of 29 surveyed in September, according to the Industrial Business Confidence Index (ICEI), released yesterday by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI). In only eight segments was an increase in confidence among businesspeople identified.
The survey showed that the sectors of motor vehicles, specialized construction services, plastic material products, furniture and metal products went from a positive outlook for confidence in August to a lack of confidence this month.
High interest
On the other hand, confidence increased in sectors such as maintenance and repair, electrical machinery and materials, wood, printing and reproduction, machinery and equipment, pulp and paper, leather and leather articles and footwear and their parts.
According to CNI economist, Marcelo Azevedo, in August industry confidence had reacted positively due to the beginning of the drop in interest rates. However, he noted, interest rates remain high and still have negative effects on the level of economic activity and credit.
“The drop in confidence was widespread and intense, not only due to the worsening perception regarding the economy’s current situation but also due to expectations for the next six months”, observed the CNI economist.

The survey also reveals that confidence in the industrial sector fell in all regions of Brazil this month. The drop was more pronounced in the Central-West (-2.9 points), North (-2.5 points) and Northeast (-2.2 points) regions. In the Southeast and South regions, the declines were 1.3 and 1.2 points, respectively.
Even with the drop in the index in the month, with the exception of the South region, all the others still have the indicator at a positive level – the ICEI varies from zero to 100, with numbers below 50 indicating a lack of confidence. The research was carried out between the 1st and 13th of September and 1,988 companies were consulted.
