Two adults, a toddler and a baby were found dead on Monday in an Upper West Side apartment in Manhattan, according to police officials.

The man, 41, and the woman, 40, were both discovered with fatal injuries to their necks at the small co-op building on West 86th Street near West End Avenue, the police said. A 3-year-old boy and a 1-year-old boy also suffered fatal injuries.

Officers found three knives near the victims, according to an internal police report. One knife was found lying on the bed next to the man, the report said.

All four victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Earlier information from the police had said the 3-year-old was a girl.

Earlier on Monday, a building superintendent, who is related to the victims and had not heard from the family since Sunday, had gone to their fourth-floor apartment to check on them, the report said.

The superintendent, who residents said worked at a nearby building, knocked on the door. When no one answered, he drilled a hole in the door to remove the lock, the report said.

He peered inside the hole, and moments later, he dialed 911.

Firefighters arrived and had to force open the door to get inside, the police said.

Officers arrived around 2:55 p.m., the report said. They found the woman in the hallway of the apartment. The man was discovered in a bedroom.

At least two dozen detectives and uniformed police gathered outside the building on Monday afternoon, surrounded by neighbors, peering out from under their awnings. On a stoop next door, a gray-haired couple sat clutching each other’s hands.

This is a developing story.
