At least 28 people have been killed in a gas explosion at a coal mine in Iran’s southern province of Khorasan. Another 17 people were injured in this incident. This information was reported by the news agency Reuters on Sunday (September 22) citing Iran’s state television.

According to the report, 24 more people are still missing since the blast that took place at 9 pm local time on Saturday. The cause of the accident was methane gas explosion in two blocks of the mine operated by Madanju Company. There were 69 workers there at the time of the incident.

Iran’s new president, Massoud Pezeshkian, said he ordered all efforts to rescue those trapped and provide assistance to their families. An investigation has been started in this incident.

It should be noted that this is not the first such incident in Iran’s mines. In 2013, 11 workers were killed in two separate mines. In 2009, 20 workers were killed in several incidents. A 2017 coal mine explosion killed at least 42 people.
